Kuzushi

Kuzushi refers to an action that throws uke off balance. Literally, it means "taking away the attacker's upright position", or even "destroying" him.

In Aikido, however, it is understood more as leading the opponent out of a stable position—the destructive interpretation of this term does not align with the philosophy of the martial art.

Ma-Ai

Ma-ai is the "harmonic distance" between Tori and Uke: just outside the reach of punches and kicks, but close enough to engage quickly.
